Your AI, your keys.

Fred is a platform, not an AI model. You bring your own provider key, so you control your costs and your relationship with the provider directly.

The four providers

  • OpenAI. Voice and text, six built in voices, best overall voice quality.
  • Claude (Anthropic). Text only, strong reasoning and nuance for longer context.
  • Gemini (Google). Voice and text, budget friendly with a free tier.
  • Grok (xAI). Text conversations.

Mix, match, and fail over

You can run more than one provider at once, for example OpenAI for voice and Claude for text. Swap providers anytime without redoing the rest of your setup. Automatic failover switches to a backup if your primary goes down, with health checks and rate limit handling built in.

Optional premium voice

For ultra natural output, ElevenLabs adds 1,000+ voices and voice cloning at about $0.30 per 1,000 characters. It handles voice output only, so you still pick an AI provider for understanding. OpenAI also offers six built in voices: Alloy, Echo, Fable, Onyx, Nova, and Shimmer.

What it costs

Provider costs are separate from your Fred license and depend on volume and voice. As a rough guide, text only at low volume runs about $5 to $20 a month, and voice enabled at medium volume about $50 to $200. These are directional estimates, not quotes.
